Dog-Friendly Fowey: The Ultimate Guide to Visiting Fowey with Your Dog

Planning a holiday in Cornwall with your four-legged friend? Discover the best dog-friendly walks, beaches, pubs, cafés and things to do in Fowey, plus our local tips for enjoying a stress-free dog-friendly holiday.

If your dog is part of the family, why should they miss out on your Cornwall holiday?

Fortunately, they don’t have to.

Fowey is a fantastic destination for a dog-friendly holiday in Cornwall. With the Fowey Estuary, miles of countryside, coastal paths, beautiful beaches and plenty of places to stop for a drink or something to eat, there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy Cornwall together.

And there is something particularly lovely about exploring Fowey with a dog, just look at Ted (living his best life).

Start the morning with a walk beside the estuary, head into town for a coffee, catch the ferry across to Polruan, explore the coast and finish the day with a meal at a dog-friendly pub.

That’s a pretty good holiday for humans and dogs alike.

At Fowey Cottages, we’ve been helping visitors enjoy holidays in Fowey for more than 25 years, so we’ve put together our guide to dog-friendly Fowey, including the best walks, beaches, places to eat and things you need to know before you arrive.

Is Fowey Dog Friendly?

Yes! Absolutely!

The Fowey Estuary and surrounding countryside are particularly well suited to dogs, with coastal paths, woodland, beaches and open countryside to explore.

The National Trust welcomes dogs at Fowey Estuary throughout the year, although owners are asked to keep dogs under close control because of livestock and wildlife.

Fowey itself is also easy to explore on foot, although it is worth remembering that this is a historic Cornish town with steep hills, narrow streets, steps and a busy working harbour.

For dogs that love an adventure, that’s all part of the fun.

And after a day exploring?

There’s nothing better than heading back to your own dog-friendly holiday cottage, putting the kettle on and letting everyone, including the dog, put their feet up.

The Best Dog-Friendly Walks in Fowey

One of the biggest reasons to choose Fowey for a dog-friendly holiday is the walking.

You don’t have to get in the car every morning to find somewhere beautiful to walk.

1. The Fowey Hall Walk

If you only do one longer walk during your stay, make it the Hall Walk.

This is a classic Fowey walk that takes you around the estuary, through woodland and countryside and across the water by ferry.

The route connects Fowey, Bodinnick and Polruan, making the ferry crossings part of the adventure.

Dogs are welcome, although the National Trust advises keeping them under close control, particularly where livestock is present.

It’s a wonderful walk for dogs who enjoy having plenty to sniff and explore and the views across the estuary are pretty special for their owners too.

Top tip: Take a lead with you even if your dog normally walks off lead. Livestock, wildlife, other walkers and narrow sections of path mean there will be times when you’ll need to keep your dog close.

2. Fowey to Readymoney Cove

For something shorter, walk from Fowey down towards Readymoney Cove.

The route takes you away from the centre of town and towards the coast, with the sheltered little cove waiting at the end.

It’s a lovely option for a morning or evening stroll.

Just remember that Readymoney Cove has seasonal dog restrictions, so check the current rules before you go. Cornwall Council’s 2026 restrictions prohibit dogs on Readymoney Cove between 10am and 6pm from 1 July to 31 August.

Early morning or later in the evening can therefore be a great time for a dog walk during the summer.

Also, you must pop into the Readymoney Beach Shop who serve hot & cold drinks, Cornish ice-cream, pasties and pastries (inc vegan options),cakes, snacks, beach goods & gorgeous gifts from Fowey. It’s a definite must visit!

3. Readymoney Cove to Polridmouth

For something a little more adventurous, continue beyond Readymoney Cove towards Polridmouth.

You’ll get beautiful coastal views, woodland, countryside and plenty of opportunities for your dog to enjoy the sights and smells of the Cornish coast.

Polridmouth is also one of the local beaches listed as suitable for dogs year-round by Fowey’s local tourism information.

It’s important to remember that coastal walking in Cornwall can involve steep paths, uneven ground and unfenced cliffs.

Keep your dog close and don’t let the excitement of a rabbit, squirrel or passing seabird result in a sudden dash towards the cliff edge!

4. Gribbin Head

For spectacular scenery, head towards Gribbin Head.

The iconic red-and-white daymark makes this one of the most recognisable stretches of coastline near Fowey, and the surrounding landscape is perfect for a longer walk.

The National Trust manages much of the area and welcomes dogs, but asks owners to keep them under control.

This is one to put on your list if your dog has plenty of energy.

Dog-Friendly Beaches Near Fowey

Let’s be honest.

For many dogs, a trip to Cornwall isn’t complete without a beach (humans too!).

And there are some wonderful beaches around Fowey.

However, dog-friendly beach rules can be complicated and they change depending on the time of year, so don’t assume that a beach that welcomes dogs in October will have the same rules in August.

Always check the latest signage and local guidance before letting your dog onto a beach or check our Dog Friendly Guide.

Readymoney Cove

Right on Fowey’s doorstep, Readymoney Cove is a beautiful sheltered sandy beach.

However, during 2026 Cornwall Council’s restriction applies from 1 July to 31 August, between 10am and 6pm.

Polridmouth Beach

Polridmouth is a beautiful, more secluded option and is listed by Fowey’s local tourism information as dog friendly throughout the year.

Lantic Bay

If you’re looking for somewhere wilder and more secluded, Lantic Bay is spectacular.

Be aware that getting there involves a steep path, and the National Trust describes the surrounding area as having limited facilities.

Lantivet Bay

Another beautiful option for walkers looking for a quieter stretch of coast.

The paths are steep and uneven in places, so this is best suited to dogs — and owners — who are comfortable with a proper coastal walk.

Polkerris

A lovely little harbour beach west of Fowey, with places to eat and drink nearby.

Always check the current local beach restrictions before travelling, as rules can vary seasonally.

Take Your Dog on the Fowey Ferry

One of the best things about having a dog in Fowey is that your four-legged friend doesn’t have to stay on one side of the river.

The local ferries carry dogs, giving you access to Polruan, Bodinnick and some fantastic walking routes.

Catching the ferry across to Polruan is an adventure in itself.

It’s a short trip across the water, but you’ll get wonderful views back towards Fowey and your dog gets to experience a boat ride!

From Polruan, you can explore the village or continue along the coast path.

Just remember that the ferry is a working service, so keep your dog under control and be considerate of other passengers.

Dog-Friendly Places to Eat in Fowey

One of the best things about taking your dog on holiday is not having to leave them behind every time you want to eat.

There are a number of pubs, cafés and restaurants in and around Fowey that welcome dogs, although policies can vary between indoor areas, terraces and dining rooms.

It’s always worth checking before you visit, particularly during busy periods.

Some local options to investigate include:

North Street Kitchen

This is a popular restaurant, that’s even won awards, welcomes dogs where they are loose dafter with a water bowl and a treat or two.

Bufala

If you want pizza then this is the place to be!

Brown Sugar Cafe

The perfect spot for coffee or perhaps a bite to eat for lunch. If you’re heading out for the day, why not grab a takeaway!

Sam’s Fowey

A lively option in Fore Street, with a menu including seafood and more casual favourites.

Pintxo Fowey

A small tapas and sherry bar on the Esplanade, close to the harbour and on the route towards Readymoney Cove.

Policies and opening hours can change, especially seasonally, so check directly with the venue before setting off.

Things to Do in Fowey with Your Dog

Not every dog-friendly activity needs to involve a long walk.

Here are some of our favourite ways to spend a day together.

Explore Fowey’s harbour

Start with a stroll around the waterfront.

Watch the boats, wander along the quay and explore the streets around the harbour.

Take the ferry to Polruan

A simple but memorable way to see Fowey from another perspective.

Go for a coastal walk

There are routes to suit different abilities, from shorter strolls to challenging coastal hikes.

Find a dog-friendly pub

After a walk, settle down with a drink and something to eat while your dog has a well-earned rest.

Have a beach day

Choose a beach where dogs are permitted and let your four-legged friend enjoy the sand and sea.

Explore the Fowey Estuary

The estuary provides some of the most beautiful scenery around Fowey, with woodland, coast and water all coming together.

What About Dogs and the South West Coast Path?

If your dog loves walking, you’ll be spoilt for choice.

The South West Coast Path around Fowey offers some spectacular scenery, but it isn’t a flat stroll.

Expect:

  • Steep climbs
  • Uneven paths
  • Steps
  • Narrow sections
  • Unfenced cliff edges
  • Livestock in some areas
  • Wildlife
  • Potentially muddy conditions

For responsible dog owners, the key is preparation.

Carry a lead, even if your dog normally walks off lead.

The National Trust specifically asks visitors to keep dogs close around livestock and wildlife, and to clean up after them.

And don’t forget water. Cornish coastal walks can feel much harder on a warm day than they look on a map.

Dog-Friendly Fowey: Things to Remember

A little preparation goes a long way.

Keep your dog under control

Fowey’s countryside is shared with farmers, wildlife, walkers and other dogs.

Keep your dog close when signs require it and around livestock.

Carry poo bags

Not every walking route has bins, so be prepared to carry your dog’s waste with you.

Take water

Particularly during warmer weather and on longer coastal walks.

Check beach restrictions

Don’t assume dogs are allowed simply because you saw another dog there.

Rules can vary by beach and season.

Be careful around cliffs

Cornwall’s cliffs are beautiful but unforgiving.

Keep dogs away from cliff edges and don’t allow them to run out of sight.

Check before eating out

Even genuinely dog-friendly establishments can have restrictions on where dogs can sit.

Don’t leave your dog in the car

The National Trust specifically advises against leaving dogs in vehicles at Fowey Estuary because the car park has limited shade.

When Is the Best Time for a Dog-Friendly Holiday in Fowey?

If you’re travelling with a dog, don’t automatically assume that the height of summer is the best option.

Spring and autumn can be fantastic.

The weather can still be beautiful, the countryside is full of colour and there are fewer people around the popular walking routes.

And there is something particularly lovely about an autumn walk along the coast before heading back to a cosy cottage.

Winter can be wonderful too.

The beaches and coastal paths can feel dramatically different when the weather is wild, and Fowey is a lovely place for a quiet break away from the crowds.

For dogs who don’t enjoy busy beaches and crowded streets, the quieter months can be especially appealing.

Why Stay in a Dog-Friendly Cottage in Fowey?

After a day exploring Cornwall, having somewhere comfortable to come back to makes all the difference.

That’s where a holiday cottage really comes into its own.

There’s no need to worry about whether your dog is allowed in the hotel dining room.

No rushing back because the hotel doesn’t allow dogs to be left alone.

No trying to fit your entire family, dog included, into one small room.

Instead, you have your own space.

A kitchen for relaxed breakfasts.

A living room for putting your feet up.

And somewhere for the dog to settle down after a day of exploring.

At Fowey Cottages, we’re a local, family-run business and have specialised in holiday cottages in Fowey for more than 25 years.

We know Fowey because it’s home.
