Where is Fowey?
Fowey is a small harbour town on Cornwall’s south coast, situated on the western side of the Fowey Estuary.
The town has a long maritime history and its sheltered, deep-water harbour has played an important role in Cornwall’s trading history for centuries. Today, you’ll find fishing boats, sailing boats, pleasure craft and ferries sharing the water.
Fowey is also surrounded by some of the most beautiful countryside and coastline in this part of Cornwall, making it a brilliant base for exploring both on foot and by boat.
And yes, if you’re wondering how to pronounce it…

Explore Fowey Harbour
If it’s your first time visiting Fowey, head down to the harbour.
It’s the heart of the town and a lovely place simply to wander, watch the boats and soak up the atmosphere.
You’ll find the Town Quay lined with places to eat and drink, while the streets leading away from the water are full of independent shops, galleries and little corners to explore.
One of the joys of Fowey is that there isn’t really a need to have a strict itinerary.
Grab a coffee, wander along the waterfront, browse the shops, stop for an ice cream and see where the afternoon takes you.
That’s very much part of the Fowey experience.
Spend Some Time at Readymoney Cove
If you’re looking for a beach in Fowey, Readymoney Cove is the one to know.
This pretty, sheltered sandy cove sits just south of the harbour and is within walking distance of Fowey town centre.
It’s a lovely place for a swim, a paddle or simply sitting on the beach with a good book while the children explore.
The cove looks across the estuary towards Polruan and is overlooked by the ruins of St Catherine’s Castle. There is also a small café/shop and toilets nearby; Readymoney Beach Cafe.
It’s worth remembering that Cornwall’s beaches can have seasonal dog restrictions, so always check the latest local guidance before heading out with your four-legged friend.
For a quiet morning, we’d recommend getting there early, grabbing a coffee and enjoying the cove before the day gets busy.
Walk to St Catherine’s Castle
Just beyond Readymoney Cove you’ll find St Catherine’s Castle, one of two small artillery forts built in the 1530s during the reign of Henry VIII to defend the Fowey harbour.
The walk there is relatively short, but you’ll be rewarded with beautiful coastal and estuary views.
It’s also a lovely example of what makes Fowey so appealing: you can leave the shops and harbour behind and, within minutes, feel as though you’ve escaped into the countryside.
Take a Walk Around the Fowey Estuary
If walking is your thing, you’re in the right place.
The Fowey Estuary and surrounding countryside offer a wonderful variety of walks, from shorter woodland strolls to longer coastal adventures.
The National Trust looks after large areas around the estuary, including woodland, farmland, creeks and coastal landscapes. The South West Coast Path also passes through the area.
One of the best-known routes is Hall Walk, which takes you around the estuary and includes two ferry crossings.
It’s a brilliant way to experience Fowey from a different perspective, particularly if you enjoy combining walking with a little bit of adventure.
And if you’ve brought the dog?
Even better.
There are plenty of opportunities to get away from the pavements and explore the countryside and coastline together — just remember to check local livestock and seasonal beach restrictions.

Catch the Ferry to Polruan
One of our favourite things about Fowey is that you don’t always need a car to explore somewhere new.
Hop on the passenger ferry across the river and you’ll find yourself in Polruan, the historic little village sitting opposite Fowey.
The journey is short, but somehow crossing the water makes it feel like you’ve gone somewhere completely different.
Polruan has narrow streets, a fascinating maritime history and access to some spectacular coastal walking.
The pedestrian ferry between Fowey and Polruan operates throughout the year, although services can be affected by weather and conditions.
It’s also a great option if you’re looking for something to do with the children that feels like an adventure without requiring a full day out.
Get Out on the Water
You can’t come to Fowey and ignore the water!
The estuary is one of the defining features of the town, so why not experience it properly?
Depending on what’s available during your visit, you can enjoy everything from harbour cruises and boat trips to fishing and boat hire.
Fowey River & Sea Cruises is based at Town Quay and offers visitors the chance to see the area from the water.
You can also look at options such as Fowey Boat Hire if you’d like to explore at your own pace.
Being on the water gives you a completely different view of Fowey, and it’s particularly beautiful when the sun is shining and the estuary is calm.
Discover Fowey’s Literary Connections
Fowey isn’t just beautiful.
It’s also inspired writers.
Perhaps the most famous connection is Daphne du Maurier, who lived in and around Fowey and drew inspiration from the landscape and atmosphere of the area.
The countryside and coastline around Fowey are closely associated with her work, including the landscapes that inspired ‘Rebecca’.
You can follow in her footsteps around parts of the Fowey Estuary, including the Gribbin Head area. The National Trust’s Gribbin Head walk is around four miles and explores some of the coastal landscape associated with du Maurier.

Spend an Afternoon Exploring the Shops
One of the things that makes Fowey different from some larger Cornish holiday destinations is its sense of individuality.
The town has a lovely selection of independent shops, galleries and boutiques.
Take your time wandering through Fore Street and the surrounding streets.
You’ll find artwork, homewares, gifts, clothing and plenty of things that are much more interesting than the usual holiday souvenirs.
It’s also a great option for a slower day when you don’t fancy hiking miles or sitting on the beach.
Have a Proper Cornish Food Day
Holiday calories don’t count.
And Fowey is a very good place to put that theory to the test.
From coffee and cake to seafood, pub lunches, ice cream and evening meals, there are plenty of places to stop and refuel.
A few local favourites to explore include:
Havener’s, Fowey, right on the Town Quay, is a great spot for enjoying the harbour atmosphere.
For something a little more special, Narla by Charlie Walters offers a more intimate dining experience.
And for coffee, cake or a relaxed daytime stop, you could try Olive Branch or Crumbs Fowey.
Of course, availability and opening times can change throughout the year, particularly outside the main season, so it’s always worth checking before you head out.
Visit Fowey Aquarium

Or simply fascinated by what’s living beneath the surface around the Cornish coast?
Fowey Aquarium sits on Town Quay and showcases local marine life.
It’s a relatively small attraction, making it easy to combine with a wander around the harbour, lunch or an ice cream.
It’s also worth having on your list for a day when the Cornish weather isn’t quite behaving itself!
Take a Trip to Mevagissey
Fancy exploring another Cornish harbour?
During the appropriate season, you can travel between Fowey and Mevagissey by boat.
The two villages have very different characters, which makes the trip particularly enjoyable.
Mevagissey is a traditional fishing village with its own winding streets and harbour, while Fowey has a strong sailing and maritime character.
The seasonal ferry is weather dependent, so check current services when planning your day.
Explore Further Afield
One of the biggest advantages of staying in Fowey is that you can enjoy the town itself while also having some fantastic Cornwall attractions within reach.
The Eden Project is around a short drive from Fowey and makes an excellent family day out, particularly if the weather isn’t playing ball.
Its famous biomes house huge indoor landscapes featuring plants from around the world.
Polperro
The beautiful fishing village of Polperro is another popular choice for a day out.
Like Fowey, it’s full of narrow streets, independent shops and coastal scenery.
Lostwithiel
Head inland and you’ll find Lostwithiel, a historic town with a completely different atmosphere from the coast.
It’s a lovely option when you fancy exploring beyond the beaches.
The wider South Cornwall coast
From Fowey you can also explore beautiful beaches, coastal paths, gardens, villages and attractions throughout South Cornwall.

Is Fowey Dog Friendly?
Fowey is a fantastic destination for a holiday with your dog.
The surrounding countryside, estuary and coast offer lots of opportunities for walks, and there are plenty of places where you can enjoy the outdoors together.
However, dog-friendly Cornwall doesn’t mean dogs are allowed everywhere at every time of year.
Some beaches have seasonal restrictions, including Readymoney Cove, where dogs are restricted during certain summer hours.
Always check the latest local beach restrictions before setting off, particularly during July and August.
And, of course, choosing a genuinely dog-friendly cottage in Fowey makes the whole experience much easier.

What’s the Best Time to Visit Fowey?
There really isn’t one answer.
Summer is perfect if you want long days, beaches, boat trips and the classic Cornwall holiday experience.
Spring is wonderful for walking, exploring and seeing the countryside burst into life.
Autumn can be beautiful, particularly if you’re coming for coastal walks, cosy pubs and a slower pace.
And winter in Fowey has a charm all of its own.
The town is quieter, the coastline can be wonderfully dramatic and there’s something rather lovely about returning from a windswept walk to a warm holiday cottage.
If you’re not tied to school holidays, we’d definitely recommend considering a visit outside the busiest summer weeks.
How Long Do You Need in Fowey?
You can certainly see some of Fowey on a weekend break.
But we’d recommend staying longer if you can.
A 3 or 4-night break*gives you enough time to explore Fowey itself, enjoy a walk or two, get out on the water and perhaps take a day trip.
A week gives you even more freedom.
You can have lazy beach days, explore the surrounding coastline, visit attractions further afield and still have days where you simply wander down to the harbour for an ice cream.
That’s the beauty of staying in Fowey.
You don’t have to fill every minute.
